For over 15 years, I’ve taught a variety of art classes to people of all ages in Los Angeles, California, covering mediums ranging from painting and drawing to metal sculpture and woodworking. On the first day of class, I would introduce this particular drawing technique to help students let go of the pressure to be perfect and to bring more fun to the process. Over time, I developed a deep appreciation for the spontaneity and charm of this contour drawing style—created without looking. I realized how much I enjoy making these drawings; they’ve become a refreshing break from my typically labor-intensive art-making practice. At an event last year, I noticed how much onlookers enjoyed watching me work, which led to a simple question: “Do people want their pets drawn?” The overwhelmingly positive response grew quickly, and now, through NOLOOK, I offer custom pet portraits that bring a contemporary, playful touch to capturing the unique personalities of pets.
